Entrevista a CuélebreInterview with Cuélebre

Ya tocaba. Tras daros a conocer las andanzas del grupo valenciano Cuélebre, ya era hora de que nos contaran ellos mismos su origen, las anécdotas de sus actuaciones, y sobre todo su presente y la llegada de su segundo álbum en el horizonte… Yhandros, compositor principal del grupo y donante universal de abrazos, nos pone al día sobre su proyecto de Medieval/Pagan Folk.

Cuélebre es una formación bien familiar para nuestros lectores, pero me intriga saber qué te rondaba por la cabeza cuando la creaste. ¿Cuál es el espíritu del grupo? ¿Qué es para ti lo que le dota de personalidad y lo hace único?

Saludos, la verdad es que la primera pregunta me es bastante complicada de responder, ya que no tenía nada realmente pensado. Fue todo bastante instintivo, quería hacer canciones que tuvieran su base en las raíces, la naturaleza. En un principio ni siquiera sabía si iba a encontrar a gente con quien llevar estos temas a directo. Una vez que hubo una formación, el objetivo cambió a llevarlo a directo. La verdad es que siempre hemos ido pensando solamente en el siguiente paso a dar, y pasito a paso estamos en esta parte del camino. Y creo que es lo que define el espíritu y la personalidad del grupo, la capacidad de trabajo de la banda, la curiosidad por aprender y sumergirnos en estos sonidos, y por supuesto las ganas de dar a conocer esta música y de vivirla.

La cantante actual es María Cobos, que forma parte del grupo desde principios de 2015. Su temperamento es muy alegre y extrovertido, ¿Crees que ha dejado ya su impronta en el grupo? ¿Cuál fue el proceso para escogerla, teníais algunas ideas en mente? ¿Cuáles han sido las causas de que hayáis tenido tantas cantantes, y que cueste encontrar a una que sea estable?

María nos sorprendió desde el principio por su capacidad de trabajo y su alegría. Cuando Marta dejó la banda para dedicarse plenamente a lo que mas le gustaba, yo tenía claro que necesitábamos a alguien que le diera mas prioridad a Cuélebre, ya que por nuestra forma de ser y de funcionar necesitamos a gente muy comprometida y con la que conectáramos en un nivel personal. Cuando hicimos las pruebas para cantante no solo fue buscar una voz, buscábamos a alguien que encajara con nosotros.

Sobre el haber tenido tantas cantantes, sinceramente han sido muchas causas, y casi todas
comprensibles. Esto es bastante duro, muchos ensayos, muchos kilómetros. En la balanza personal todo esto tiene que compensar con el hecho de vivir estas experiencias, esta música, si no es así todo acaba cayendo por su propio peso.

Alberto Andrade, músico valenciano con formación académica, también ha empezado a colaborar con el grupo. ¿Qué papel tiene en Cuélebre?

Estamos todos completamente convencidos de que Alberto le va a dar otra dimensión a la banda, en muchos niveles y muchos detalles, entiende perfectamente la personalidad del proyecto y tiene mucho que aportar. Sobre su papel en la banda, pues como todos los que estamos en ella, va a estar bastante pluriempleado, tiene aptitudes para muchas cosas y desde luego vamos a aprovechar todas las mismas.

Habéis compuesto una serie de temas nuevos que formarán parte de vuestro segundo álbum ¿En qué parte del proceso estáis, contáis ya con algún tema grabado? En conjunto, ¿hay alguna novedad a nivel musical? (estilo, instrumentos, técnicas, etc.).

El álbum está prácticamente compuesto en su totalidad, y estamos ya en proceso de grabación. Sobre las novedades o cambios creo que es tarea del público el opinar, para mi va a ser un disco con una idea mucho mas definida y mejor trabajada, pero que sin duda va a respetar nuestro sonido y nuestra manera de enfocar nuestra música.

¿Qué título tendrá el nuevo álbum?¿Seguirá alguna temática definida?

La criatura ya tiene nombre, que además como en el anterior disco creemos que define bien lo que habrá en su interior. Se llama Anamann que es un vocablo proto-celta que significa “Alma”, algo que todos vamos a poner en las nuevas canciones. Musicalmente seguiremos dando nuestra visión musical y letrísticamente será mas variado.

En cuanto al proceso de publicación y difusión, ya no contáis con vuestro sello discográfico anterior. ¿Recurriréis a un nuevo sello, u os decantáis por la autoedición? ¿Vais a mantener el CD como formato único?

Este fue un tema que hemos hablado mucho a lo largo de los últimos meses, y tenemos claro que va a ser un disco autoeditado, además en todos los sentidos. Tanto en la grabación y masterización como en el diseño visual del mismo, será nuestro trabajo lo que la gente vea y escuche. El CD y el formato digital para descarga van a ser los soportes. Si algún día nos diera por editar algo en vinilo sería algo muy especial y grabado totalmente en analógico, para que el sonido acompañara al formato.

¿Qué opinión te merece la financiación de los álbumes mediante crowdfunding? Como sabrás, el grupo valenciano Pronoise consiguió financiar su segundo álbum con este método ¿Crees que el público español ya está suficientemente concienciado como para que sea una alternativa viable?

Personalmente creo que es un sistema de preventa genial, y que da una independencia a las bandas que es muy necesaria, y sí, creo que el público está preparado siempre y cuando se le ofrezca un buen producto por el que apostar. Y es labor de las bandas el saber qué producto ofrecer y el qué pedir. He visto a bandas iniciar un crowdfunding para un videoclip de unos cuantos miles de euros sin tener nada mas que fotos y algún tema publicado, y claro, no prosperaron. Creo que para que el público apueste con seguridad por tu producto tienes que ofrecer esa seguridad, y por supuesto utilizarlo con mesura, para poder dar salida a tu trabajo, no a algo más parecido a un capricho.

Pasando a otros temas… Cuéntanos la anécdota del bar Cuélebre, por favor. ¡Es demasiado buena para que la gente se la pierda!

El bar Cuélebre, en fin, anécdota de mejor reir que llorar y que define muy bien algunas cosas que ocurren en estos lares. Un buen día un amigo me envió una foto de un logo de un bar-restaurante llamado el Cuélebre en Benidorm. Hasta ahí todo normal, no te puedes hacer una idea de a cuantos lugares o negocios se les pone el nombre de Cuélebre en Asturias, de hecho es uno de los motivos del nombre del grupo, que me recuerda mucho a aquellas tierras. El problema venía en que este bar en concreto usaba nuestro logo, que además era un trabajo que Victoria Francés hizo para nosotros, así que llamé al dueño para preguntarle si sabía que estaba usando un logo ajeno y que no me parecía muy correcto. El dueño se me puso un poco desagradable al teléfono, dejando caer que iba a llamar a sus abogados y que ese logo lo había encontrado por internet y no tenía por que darme ninguna explicación.

Tras lo cual yo lo publiqué en mi perfil de Facebook y en apenas 2 horas se le llenó su espacio virtual de críticas, quejas y en definitiva mala publicidad, y al rato recibí una llamada del dueño pidiendo disculpas, ofreciendo que llegáramos a algún acuerdo y que por favor dejaran de llegarle comentarios negativos de gente tan “extraña” ha ha ha ha. Sinceramente casi todos me aconsejaban que optara por la denuncia, pero preferí darle la vuelta a la situación y sacar algo bueno de la misma. Así que en breve haremos una visita al bar El Cuélebre, y en vez de pedirle que cambie los logos o tener una discusión pues tendremos discos y material de la banda allí a la venta, y bueno, esperemos que también unas cuantas sidras ha ha ha ha.

Recientemente has estado actuando con Dagda (miembro del grupo Celtibeerian) por distintos puntos de la geografía española, en plena calle y tocando como dúo de zanfona y arpa. ¿Qué tal ha sido la reacción de la gente? ¿Son receptivos a instrumentos tan poco comunes a pie de calle? Por parte de los ayuntamientos, ¿habéis encontrado incentivos o interés?

La reacción de la gente ha sido maravillosa, y no solo de los transeúntes, una mañana una trabajadora de una zumería nos trajo unos zumos en agradecimiento por “hacer más amena su jornada de trabajo”. También nos preguntaban si íbamos a volver al día siguiente para volver a vernos. Por desgracia por parte de los ayuntamientos lo más que hemos encontrado es indiferencia, aunque tampoco nos han dado problemas serios. Personalmente aunque no fuera músico seguiría sin entender las prohibiciones a los músicos callejeros, estoy convencido de que con la primera ciudad ya iba incluido al menos un músico transmitiendo alegría en sus calles, es algo inherente y natural.

Este año habéis estado muy ocupados con actuaciones en distintas ciudades y festivales (Trolls & Légendes en Bélgica, la Noche de los Candiles en Almócita, Raíz Ibérica en Madrid, etc.). ¿Qué tal ha sido la experiencia, qué destacarías de cada uno de ellos? Da la impresión de que cada festival tiene un ambiente y enfoque distinto, ¿no? ¿Tenéis anécdotas?

Tenemos la suerte de haber podido participar en eventos muy especiales, y además de en general ser tratados de manera estupenda en los mismos. Bélgica fue una gran experiencia para nosotros, desde la acogida del público para la que no tengo palabras, al trato de la organización y sobretodo las bandas que pudimos conocer, hablar, compartir cervezas… una experiencia sin ninguna pega sinceramente.

La Noche de los Candiles es la muestra perfecta de “querer es poder”, es alucinante que un pueblecito tan pequeño pueda realizar un evento tan especial. Y Raíz Ibérica fue la primera piedra de algo que va a ir creciendo, un evento que además de música incluye conferencias y un tono cultural importante.

Sobre anécdotas, pues puedo decir que acabar en la caravana de Edwin, gaitero de Prima Nocta, es sinónimo de grandes risas, buena cerveza y una mañana muy resacosa ha ha ha ha.

Un punto y aparte ha sido las distintas ediciones de la Tormenta Celtibérica, junto con Àrnica y Kéltica Hispanna, que os han llevado por distintos puntos de la Península Ibérica, incluyendo la localidad de Aveiro (Portugal). ¿Cuál es su estado de salud, queda Tormenta para rato? ¿Pensáis extenderla a otros puntos de la geografía española?

Tormenta Celtibérica es algo muy especial en todos los sentidos, y lo seguirá siendo, de eso no hay duda. Siempre estamos dispuestos a tocar en sitios nuevos y desde luego que lo seguiremos haciendo, en mente tenemos hacer conciertos más especiales y así no banalizar la idea.

Por delante os queda actuar en el Festival Mediaval, en Alemania, junto a grupos consagrados como Corvus Corax y Omnia. Me imagino que estaréis totalmente en vuestra salsa ¿Qué esperáis encontraros allí? ¿Es inevitable el cachondeo y la diversión en un festival tan afín a vosotros, más allá de la responsabilidad de tocar?

El Festival Mediaval es uno de los festivales mas importantes que existen en este estilo, para nosotros es un orgullo poder formar parte de él, y desde luego lo que más tenemos en mente es dar el mejor concierto posible, divertirnos y aprender de otras bandas y al menos en mi caso degustar unas cuantas cervezas de allí.

Con los mencionados festivales fuera de España, la aparición en radios especializadas online (Celtcast, Wyldwood Radio), recopilatorios (Wild Folk Pagan Vol III), webzines (Peek-a-boo) e incluso en la revista alemana Zillo Medieval (recopilatorio de septiembre 2014), ¿Cuál creéis que es el nivel de impacto que habéis conseguido hasta el momento?

Lo ignoro, sé que Cuélebre es un nombre que va sonando poco a poco, pero para mi el reto es en cada concierto, que es donde realmente se nos puede apreciar el trabajo como banda, y además donde mejor podemos saber de primera la mano las impresiones del público. La verdad es que no tenemos ninguna queja con lo conseguido hasta ahora, desde el principio sabía que la suerte se facilita con trabajo y humildad, y es el camino que vamos a seguir llevando.

Bueno, pues la cosa ha llegado a su fin. ¿Has dejado algo en el tintero que quieras contar? Es un orgullo poder contar como amigos con gente tan creativa y original como vosotros, ¡seguid adelante! Un abrazo a toda la familia de Cuélebre.

Si nos hemos dejado algo en el tintero ya saldrá mas adelante ha ha ha ha, van a haber sorpresas y eventos maravillosos que aún están por ocurrir, y las gracias te las damos nosotros por estar al pie del cañón y tener este gran espacio dedicado a esos estilos musicales que merecen mas atención de la que a veces se les presta. It was their turn. After let you know about the adventures of the valencian group Cuélebre, it was about time themselves told us about their origin, the anecdotes of their performances, and above all their present and the coming of their second album on the horizon… Yhandros, the band’s main composer and universal hug donor, bring us up to date about his Medieval/Pagan Folk project.

Cuélebre is a well familiar line-up to our readers, but it intrigues me to know what was haunting you when you created it. Which is the band’s spirit? What do you believe that provides it with personality and makes it one-of-a kind?

Greetings, truth is that first question is quite complicated to answer, since I didn’t have planned anything, it was all quite instinctive. I wanted to make songs which were based in roots, nature… In the beginning I didn’t even knew if I was going go find people to play these musical themes to live. Once there was a line-up, the objective turned to play them live. Truth is that we always have planned only the next step, and step by step, we’re in this point of the path. And I believe this is what defines the spirit and personality of the band, the ability to work, the need to learn and to immerse ourselves into these sounds, and of course the attitude to spread and to live this music.

María Cobos is the current singer, and she has joined the band since beginning of 2015. Her temperament is very cheerful and extroverted, do you think she’s left her stamp in the group yet? What was the process in order to choose her? Did you have any ideas in mind? Which have the reasons been of having so many singers, and of having trouble in finding a steady one?

Maria surprised us from the beginning because of her ability to work and her happiness. When Marta left the band to fully dedicate to what she most likes, I was sure we needed someone who gave more priority to Cuélebre, considering that, because of our nature, we need very committed people who we connect with at a personal level.

About the fact of having so many singers in the past, there’ve been sincerely many reasons. This is quite hard, a lot of rehearsals, many kilometres and lots of work. While tipping the scales at a personal level, all this has to balance out and make up with the fact of living these experiences, this music, if not it collapses under its own weight.

Alberto Andrade, valencian music with an academic training, has also begun to cooperate with the band. Which is his role in Cuélebre?

We are all fully convinced that Alberto’s going to contribute with another dimension to the band, at many levels and details. He perfectly understands the project’s personality and he has a lot to provide with. About his role in the group, as everyone inside it, he’s gonna be quite moonlighter. He has abilities in many things, and of course we’re going to take advantage of them.

You have composed new musical themes, which will become part of your second album. What stage of the process are you at? Do you already have any recorded song? Is there any novelty in a musical point of view? (style, instruments, techniques, etc.)

The album is practically entirely composed, and we’re already in the recording process. About the novelties or changes, I think it’s a work for the audience to opine about. For me, it’s gonna be a disc with a very clearer and better crafted idea, but without doubt it’s going to respect our sound and our way of approach our music.

What’s the title of the new album? Will it follow any clear topic?

The creature has already a name, which as in the former disc, we believe it properly defines what’s gonna be in the inside. It’s called Anamann, which is a proto-celtic term for “Soul”, something that all of us are going to infuse in the new songs. Musically, we’ll continue offering our musical vision, and it’ll be more lyrically varied.

Relating the publication and dissemination process, you don’t rely on your former record label. Will you turn to a new label, or do you opt for self publishing? Are you going to keep the CD as the only format?

This is a matter we have talked very much about in the last months, and it’s clear that it’s going to be a self published disc, in all senses, as much in recording and mastering as in visual design, it will be our effort what people will see and listen to. CD and digital downloading format are the chosen formats, and if any day we publish anything in vinyl it would be something very special and totally recorded in an analogue way, so that the sound would join the format.

What opinion deserves to you the albums finance by crowdfunding? As you’d know, the valencian group Pronoise managed to finance their second album with this method. Do you believe that spanish public is already aware enough in order to became a viable alternative?

Personally, I think that it’s a great pre-sale system, and it gives a very necessary independence to the bands, and yes, I think that public is ready if and when they’re offered a good product which they can bet on. The bands’ task is to know what product to offer and what to ask for in retribution. I’ve seen bands to start a crowdfunding for a few thousand of euros video clip, without nothing more than pics and some published song, and of course, they didn’t thrive. I think that if you want the audience to bet with confidence on your product, you have to offer that confidence, and of course to make use of it with moderation, in order to roll out your work, not for something like a caprice.

Let’s move on to other topics… Please, tell us the anecdote of the bar Cuélebre. It’s too good to be missed!

The bar Cuélebre, all in all, an anecdote kind of it’s better to laugh than to cry, it defines very well some of the things that happen over here. A good day a friend of mine sent me a picture of a logo from a bar/restaurant called “El Cuélebre” in Benidorm (Spain). Up to there is all ordinary, you can’t get used to the idea of how many shops or businesses are called Cuélebre in Asturias (Spain). In fact, this is one of the reasons of the band’s name, it recalls me of those lands. The problem came from the fact that this specific bar was using our logo, that in adittion was a work from Victoria Francés for us, so I called the owner to ask him if he knows that he was using someone else’s logo and that it didn’t seemed very appropiate to me. The owner got a bit nasty answering the phone, insinuating that he was going to call his lawyers and that he had found that logo on the internet and it wasn’t compulsory to give any reason.

After that, I published it on my Facebook profile, and hardly two hours later his virtual space was full of criticisms, complaints and in short, bad publicising. A short time later I received a phone call from the owner apologizing and offering to come to terms, and asking please to stop receiving negative comments from “strange” people ha ha ha ha. Sincerely, almost everyone advised me to choose denunciation, but I prefered to change things up and to get something good from it. So, in short we’ll visit the bar Cuélebre, and instead of asking him to change the logos or quarreling with him, we’ll leave discs and merchandising for sale there, and well, we hope to have a few ciders too ha ha ha ha.

You’ve been recently playing with Dagda (from Celtibeerian) at different locations of the spanish geography, in the street with a hurdy-gurdy and harp duo. How’s been the people’s reaction? Are they receptive to such uncommon instruments playing in the street? Relating the city halls, did you find any interest or incentive?

People reacted wonderfully, and not just the passers: one morning a juice worker brought us some juices in gratitude for «making her workday more pleasant». We were also asked if we were going to return the next day so people could see us again. Unfortunately from the city halls we’ve found indifference at most, but they didn’t give us any serious problems. Personally, even if I wouldn’t be a musician I still would not understand all these prohibitions toward the street musicians, I’m convinced that the first builded city had a musician included: it’s something inherent and natural.

This year you’ve been very busy with gigs in different cities and festivals (Trolls & Légendes in Belgium, La Noche de los Candiles in Almócita, Raíz Ibérica in Madrid, etc.). How’s been the experience, what would you highlight about any of them? It gives the impression that each festival has a different ambient and approach, aren’t they? Any anecdote?

We are lucky to have been involved in such special events, and also to have been treated in a very special way in all of them. Belgium was a wonderful experience for us, since the reception of the public which I have no words, to the treatment of the organisation, and specially for the bands we were able to meet, talk, share beers… an experience with no possible complain, trully.

La Noche de los Candiles (The Candle’s Night) is the perfect example of «where there’s will there’s a way». It’s incredible how such a little town can make such a special event. And Raíz Ibérica (Iberian Root) was the first stone of something that will get growing, an event that includes not just music but also conferences and an important cultural shade.

Regarding anecdotes, I can only say that end at Edwin’s (Prima Nocta bagpiper) caravan is synonym of great laughs, good beer and a very hungover day after ha ha ha.

The various editions of the Tormenta Celtibérica (Celtiberian Storm), along with Àrnica and Kéltica Hispanna marked a break for you that have led you to different parts of the Iberian Peninsula, including the town of Aveiro (Portugal). What is its state of health? Is there storm still to go? Do you plan to extend it to other parts of the Spanish geography?

Tormenta Celtibérica is something very special in every way, and will remain as it is, there’s no doubt. We are always ready to play in new places and of course we will continue doing so. We have in mind to make more concerts, but in a more special way so we don’t trivialize the idea.

Ahead of you is acting in the Festival-Mediaval in Germany, with enshrined bands as Corvus Corax and Omnia. I imagine that you will be completely in your element. What do you hope to find there? Are joke and fun inevitable in such a festival so related to you , beyond the responsibility of playing?

Festival Mediaval is one of the most important festivals that exist in this style, for us it is an honor to be part of it, and certainly what we have more in mind is to give the best possible concert, have fun and learn from other bands and, at least in my case, enjoy a few beers there is something that has to happen, too.

With the festivals outside Spain mentioned above, the appearance on specialized online radios (Celtcast, Wyldwood Radio), compilations (Wild Pagan Folk Vol III), webzines (Peek-a-boo) and even in the German magazine Zillo Medieval (compilation September 2014) what do you think is the level of impact you have achieved so far?

I do not know, I know Cuélebre is a name that is playing little by little, but for me the challenge it is at every concert, which is where one can really appreciate the work as band, and also where we can better know first hand impressions of the public. The truth is that we have no complaints with the achievements so far, from the beginning I knew that luck comes with hard work and humility, and it is the way we will continue to carry.

Well, the thing has come to an end. Did you leave something that you want to tell? We are proud to count as friends such creative and original people like you, so go ahead! A hug to all the family of Cuélebre.
